Driving License Category A2

The category A2 driving license allows you to drive motorcycles without a sidecar, with a a maximum engine power of 35 kW. The power/weight ratio of the vehicle must not exceed 0.2kW/kg.

This driving licence is designed to let you get your small motorcycle driving licence early, and then move on to the A2 licence, which has more engine power.

Scooters and motorcycles

It permits the use of small-sized motorcycles (up to 50cc) and mopeds with a maximum capacity of 125cc. The goal of the class is to let you slowly ascend the ladder of engine power, and then ponder a larger one. The test is a little more difficult than the first category, and you'll need to study more to prepare for it.

The category A2 driving licence is valid until you reach the age of 24. It can be used in conjunction with a car driving licence category A1 or as a part of a provisional category B driver's license. If you are older than 24 years old, however you require a full category A driving licence to operate a motorcycle that have more than 35 kW.

You can obtain a group A1 driving licence at the age of 16 (in Denmark and Malta, 15 and kat B in Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Italy, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia, 14). Once you reach the age of 16, you must pass the A2 category motorbike test. You must pass the test before turning 18. After two years, you can change to category A.

After passing the test for category A2, you are allowed to operate a motorcycle, either with or without a sidecar, and vehicles with up to 35 kW of power. These vehicles must have a weight/power that is not more than 0.02 kW/kg. They cannot be derived directly from a vehicle with twice the power.

If you've completed the two-part test for a moped or motorcycle of a lower category since 1st Jul 1996, you can skip the theory test and take only the practical exam. You can ride a smaller moped or scooter that has L plates, or get the new AM licence, which will enable you to ride up to 50cc bikes with a top speed of 45mph. The AM licence will only be valid if you've passed the test in your theory and have completed nine hours of training divided into theory and practical lessons at a driving school.

Vehicles with four wheels

This category includes all motor vehicles with four wheels that are not passenger cars or buses. This category also includes utility vehicles such as pickups vans, panels, and pickups. Campers, motorhomes and lorries are also included. This category can also include vehicles like ambulances, hearses and carryalls that are designed to transport more than eight persons or have a maximum authorized mass of greater than 750 kg. A1 drivers are able to operate vehicles of this type with a trailer weighting up to 775kg.

To be able to drive a car of this category, you need to pass the theory test. To do this you need to take a total of 12 lessons of 90 minutes of the fundamental content and four additional lessons of 90 minutes for the additive (category A2). The theoretical tests are a passing score of 70%..

If you pass the theory test, you will be required to do a practical driving exam on private land and on roads that are public. If you pass both tests, you will be issued with a request for a driving license. You will need to present this request to the local authority within three years after passing the practical test.

Once you have passed your driving test, it is possible to start driving vehicles that fall in the category of A2. In some countries, if held an A1 licence for two years, you will not have to take an additional driving test in order to obtain a category A2 licence that permits you to drive motorbikes with up to 35 kW. This is a reason to learn the ropes of operating less powerful two-wheelers prior to moving up to more powerful machines.

If you hold a category A2 driving licence, you can also drive tricycles provided that they have the capacity of cylinders up to 125cc and an output of not more than 11 kW. This category was formerly part of the A license. Drivers who had an entire category B licence prior to 19 January 2013 had the entitlement to use mopeds too and retain this right.

Motor vehicles with five or more wheels

This category comprises vehicles with motors designed to be used on the road for transport of passengers or goods. These vehicles should have at least two or three wheels that are in contact with the ground and a driver's seat or saddle and a motor able to be able to travel at speeds of 20 miles an hour or more. These vehicles are equipped with brakes and a steering wheel. They can also be controlled and driven in reverse. In certain instances, the hood of these vehicles can be opened. This designation was historically used for trucks (vans, minivans, panel, pickups as well as sport utility vehicles) and buses that carry 16 or greater passengers. A slightly different definition is used by an additional federal requirement that governs uniform licensing standards for drivers of commercial vehicles. This definition excludes vehicles with a weight of 26,001 pounds gross weight or more.

The category A2 driving licence can be used for driving a motorized cycle, moped or motorcycle. This type of license is only valid for motors with the maximum cylinder volume of 125 cubic centimeters, or a maximum power of 15 Kilowatts. It is also possible to use it to drive a motor tricycle. The minimum age for this license class is 16 years old. Physically disabled people may also be eligible to drive motor tricycles that fall in category A1 or A.

Some people opt to get an operator license, which is valid for vehicles with a a maximum authorised mass of 3,500kg, and up to eight seats. Drivers with an operator license are also permitted to tow trailers which weigh up to 750kg MAM. They are also permitted to tow a trailer up to 3,500kg using a tractor or construction equipment.

The designs of different types of three-wheeled and two-wheeled vehicles continue to change, it's essential that NHTSA keep its guidelines up to current. Importers, manufacturers and import specialists often request interpretations from the agency regarding the proper classification of vehicles. As a result, NHTSA has developed a set of guidelines to help in the classification of these vehicles. These guidelines include:

Motor vehicles with trailers

Category A2 includes motor vehicles with trailers. These are not vehicles driven by drivers, but are towed by larger vehicles such as cars. For instance the tractor that pulls trailers would fall into this category, as well as small trucks designed for carrying loads, such as those employed by plumbers and painters to carry tools and supplies to their work sites. The maximum authorized mass (MAM) for this class, is 8,250kg.

To drive vehicles in this category you must have passed the theory test for category A1 or have obtained a driving license by direct entry. You may also need to pass a driving test depending on the kind of vehicle you intend to drive.

The license you get for category A2 is valid for three years from the date on which you take your theory exam. You must renew it prior to the expiry date to keep it in force.

In addition to the categories above, you may also get a licence to drive other vehicles that meet certain requirements. For instance, you'll need a special license to drive a large-sized goods vehicle, which is classed as category C. This requires a thorough understanding of specific regulations for the transport of dangerous goods.

A driving licence for cars in category B permits you to drive an automobile and a trailer that don't meet the requirements of category C. This is where code 96 is used. Code 96 is added to your licence for category B drivers licences after you have completed your theory test and practical test but your vehicle and trailer don't qualify for a category C license under the norms.

To operate a vehicle in this category you must hold a driving licence for category B for at least two years, and pass an exam in theory and a practical test for this category. You must also have attended an specialized course and completed additional training to be qualified for this. This course is referred to as the driver's training course.
