It's a standard stove that has the burner mounted to a body that is anchored by three fold-out support legs. The pump is just above the fuel line, while the generator loop runs around the inlet, and the flame spreader is situated just above. The burner is a slow-moving flame type. This makes it less affected by the wind.

One of the best features is that it can be used with a canister of isobutane or propane, making it a versatile little cooker. It is easy to simmer with isobutane and propane, and it burns all fuels at a reasonable rate. However when using white gas, the stove can be a little slower.

One important thing to remember when using the Hydra is that the instructions are written in English that was clearly not written by an indigenous speaker of the language. The flame is strong when turned to its maximum and will easily boil the water to a liter in two minutes or less. The only downside is that it's not as effective to simmer as other stoves.

This is the reason MSR has created the Dragonfly stove to be an efficient simmering burner. It's similar to the whistler but is more compact and provides superior performance. It's not as affordable as the Whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus cookset and stove is an excellent alternative, providing the same setup at less than half the cost. You can also purchase a Whisperlite International or Universal for isobutane containers as well. The same basic design is used for both, but the Universal version can also be used with canister fuel as well.
