Transponder Codes
Like its name suggests, transponders send out an encoded signal containing the four-digit code when it is being questioned by air traffic control. The signal is referred to as a SQUAWK code and is the basis for identifying aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to transmit specific messages to air traffic control in the case of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers of changing weather conditions. Squawk codes are frequently used to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot is unable to talk on the radio and are crucial to ensure safe flying.
Every aircraft is equipped with a transponder that responds to radar interrogation by displaying an identifier code. This enables ATC to identify an aircraft that is surrounded by screens. Transponders can be set to respond in different ways when asked. Mode A transmits only the code, while mode C also provides altitude information. Mode S transponders transmit more specific information, including callsigns as well as position. This can be useful in airspace that is crowded.
